Alpe d’Huez is our favourite early season resort. Early on, it is a Glacius top 3 place to be as it basks in the strong southern sun. However, as the season marches in to March and April, the snow begins to suffer.
Alpe d’Huez is large and modern however it is not full of horrible buildings like other purpose built resorts. There are a number of linked villages that allow very quick access to the ski area whilst providing a rustic and smaller base (Vaujanay and Villard Reculas).Where Alpe d’Huez however is simply fantastic is its ability to cater in equal measure for beginners, intermediates and experts.
If you are a fan of skiing in trees, then you might wish to look at other wooded resorts. Pretty much every inch of piste sits above the treeline. This leaves very few options when the weather closes in.
The ski area is linked well and queues are rarely an issue.
Apres is lively with the Folie Douche leading the early afternoon on-slope goings on.
Accommodation wise, it’s chalet central with Glacius being able to offer for all tastes and budgets. If you prefer hotels, the there are plenty of those too, most sitting around the 3* level.
