Skiing in the USA is moreish. The ski runs are deserted, ice is rarely a concern and whether in the resort or on the mountain, restaurant service is unrivalled. Piste grooming is immaculate and taken very seriously leaving you with a blissful perfect piste. Piste difficulty is calibrated differently– Green circles are your easy runs, blue squares equate to European reds and black diamond runs equate to European black. Double black diamonds are steeper than most pistes in Europe and triple blacks need to be treated with respect.
No resort in America allows you to cruise for miles and miles like the Three Valleys. You also don’t benefit from the spectacular views that the European Alps offer. If you like tree skiing however you are in luck and resort charm varies from resort to resort.
Lessons are bizarre in that they are organised daily and not weekly. Ski Passes and equipment hire are more expensive than Europe but then eating and drinking is generally cheaper than Europe. If you look under 30, carry ID. If you are under 21, there is no chance of drinking.
All in all, USA has a huge amount to offer. Our favourite American resorts are below.
