Overview

France is the most popular destination in Europe for skiing and snowboarding and it is easy to see why. There are just so many wonderful mountains, allowing for vast ski areas to be mapped out. There is a huge amount of accommodation, amazing lift systems to keep the queues from forming and some strong amenities to fit to every taste and budget.

There are however, so many resorts to choose from. In our portfolio, we have chosen what we believe to be the strongest contenders, taking into account a number of factors such as travel times, snow-surety, amenities, apres, learning slopes. childcare on offer and so much more. Whilst there is no one “perfect” ski resort, there are certainly some resorts that lend themselves to particular types of holidays.
To explain further, if maximising your piste miles is a priority, then we suggest we look at the larger resorts and areas such as the Three Valleys, Paradiski, and Porte du Soieil regions. However if small and boutique are more your thing, La Clusaz or Megeve are certainly worth checking out. And if you are a powder hound, Chamonix and Val d’Isere should certainly be on your radar. Whilst the likes of Austria and Italy predominantly offer hotel accommodation, the French resorts boast a huge range of chalets, whether that be on a shared or private basis. We also act on behalf of the leading self-catered apartments which are a far cry from the old shoe boxes that were built in the nineties and before. Food and drink play a big role in a French ski holiday and no holiday is complete without raclette, tartiflette, and locally-made charcuterie. This of course should be washed down by local wine and finished with a shot of the local spirit, Génépi. The après ski scene is also a big feature at many (but not all) of the major resorts, particularly those packed with international visitors. The world famous Folie Douce brand has expanded from its spiritual home in Val d’Isère to the like of Avoriaz and Alpe d’Huez in recent years, and Méribel in particular offers a great party.
In terms of travelling to the ski resorts of France – it is very easy. The Alps are within easy reach of Geneva and Lyon airports, whilst Toulouse is nice and close to the Pyrenees.

Key Facts

Airports

France has three airports that are very convenient for skiing; Geneva, Lyon and Grenoble. Should you be destined for the
Pyrenees, Toulouse is your best airport.

Getting around France

A few resorts sit nearby local railway stations however the railway access is not comparable when compared to Austria or Switzerland. Most of our guests make their transfers by road, whether it be by private or shared transfer.

Corporates

Given the ease of access, many French resorts are strong picks as destinations for a corporate ski trip; Morzine, in good snow, is a strong contender. Should 2.5 hours in a coach not put clients off, Meribel proves incredibly popular as does our hidden gem – Serre Chevalier. Courchevel is always a safe bet, and we can even arrange for your groups to enjoy Courchevel without it costing the earth! Val Thorens, again in good weather, is most verging on the unbeatable! It is however fairly bleak on bad weather days. For a less apres-focused experience, La Plagne also works well.
Glacius can prepare options for you in
relation to the abovementioned resorts as well as many more.

Groups

Skiing is best done in a group and many French resorts resorts are just great for groups as they tick a huge number of boxes. There are may aspects to a successful group ski trip, however a resort that caters for low level skiers through to experts is a very good start. And many French resorts allow for this, which means groups can meet and split up only to meet again during the day, lunch together and to ski/board together as many French resorts offer blue and red routes serviced by the same lift.
Food and drink is a huge part of the holiday and where better to indulge than in the French Alps.
Glacius knows what it takes to make a group ski trip a success.

Families

France is very popular with families for good
reason. Glacius believes that the key factors that go a long way to ensuring a successful family ski holiday are safe easy access to nursery slopes, good childcare and conveniently
located accommodation. The reality is that all the resorts we feature offer a very high level of family friendliness. Some resorts however offer that little bit more than others in terms of cinemas, bowling alleys, leisure centres, ice rinks as well as weekly displays and other events.
