Overview
Hotel Altapura, situated at 2,300m in the highest ski resort in Europe, was Val Thorens’ first five* luxury hotel. Set back slightly from the centre of lively Val Thorens, however the slopes can be accessed directly from the hotel’s ski room, situated opposite the Plein Sud chairlift at the bottom of resort.
The hotel calls itself a “ski palace”, and we think it is fairly justified in doing so with its spacious, elegant areas with exposed wood and stone. The large picture windows also offer the most amazing views, making it a wonderful place for a couples, families and groups to enjoy a ski break in style. There is a real buzz to the hotel which has less of an alpine feel and more of a cosmopolitan one. With three restaurants, an extensive 1000m² spa area and a whole host of latest in-room tech, you could easily forget you were high up in the mountains.
The hotel’s style and quality is continued in the bedrooms. All rooms enjoy a welcoming ambience, including light wood furnishings, warm fabrics, large French windows and a range of new technologies. Rooms include iPod and iPhone docks and a Mac Mini TV with HD screen. The bathrooms are spacious.
The hotel’s terrace is the place to be when the sun is out and the views on offer are spectacular. Later on, or if the sun is not shining, the lounge bar, complete with an open fire, is a great sanctuary. The childrens’ area is a hit for the little ones, allowing some well earned chill time for the mums and dads in the hotel.
The hotel offers three restaurants. Les Enfants Terribles is a mountain style brasserie whilst the La Laiterie serves a range of fondue (including Champagne or Truffle fondue) for an authentic Savoyard experience. The third restaurant, 2.Mille.3, offers an alternative take on the traditional, including hot dishes from the rotisserie, Asian woks and pasta dishes.
The spa is 1000m² and includes an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, ice fountain and Technogym. A range of beauty and massage treatments are available, and payable, locally including sport treatments.
The hotel has its own ski shop, with access via the boot room to the slopes. You can pre-book your skis when you book your room, and take advantage of the made to measure service when you arrive.
